It is possible to use social media incorrectly

12/7/2011 4:39:29 PM

Small business resources, such as Facebook and Twitter, are helpful in garnering new customers. The outlets open new doors for companies, allowing them the ability to compile unique consumer mailing lists to use in direct marketing campaigns. However, in order for businesses to gain the trust of followers they've earned online, they'll need to make sure they're using social media correctly.

Social media can be a damaging tool if not used wisely. Most business owners already understand the value in posting unique and continuous content online, but when posts get off topic, they have the possibility to affect the credibility of the social profile. If entrepreneurs take small business tips to heart and remember to keep posts on target, users will respect the source as an authority leader in any industry.

An important factor for handling a social presence online is focusing on the posted content. Including posts that are off topic can limit the success of a company, however, repetitive self-promotion can too. There needs to be an even balance between content and promotions, articles that engage but also the occasional special deal. Businesses that fail to properly manage their online content often find that social media outlets do more harm than good.
